Watch this television trailer for "The Happening," then we'll talk.
Did you notice anything missing from that preview? Here's a hint, it's quite possibly his best twist yet!
Yup, you guessed it, there was no mention of the last name Shyamalan. Think M. Night has a complex about something?
I reported a while back that after the miserable failure that was "Lady in the Water," that Shyamalan was considering NOT attaching his name to a future project for fear that his name would make people not want to see it. If there's anything that he's good at, it's knowing that people are tired of his movies coming up lame (see "Signs") and his oh-so-special twist endings.
As you noticed in the trailer, it doesn't mention his name... ever. Rather, it mentions the director's two successful films. As an added bonus, it makes note that this is the FIRST rated-R movie from said director. Double bonus, it comes out on Friday the 13th! Whoa, suddenly I give a crap. Not really, nor does Defamer.
What a surprise, the early reviews aren't good, either. Say bye-bye Shama-Lame. Watch out for those tree-monkey-people, they might come down and snatch you up.

he gets a lot of crap but i just don't understand it. yes lady and the water wasn't great. and casting himself as the world saving writer, a bit much. but i think it's seen that way because his previous stuff was and is pretty good. i have heard the happening is going to be pretty bad and has no real ending. but you def haven't heard the last from m. night as he is currently tapped to helm the big screen adapt of "avatar: the last air bender" which if you haven't seen is an fun and original idea and i'm looking fwd to it. end rant.

It's not that he has bad ideas, it's more that he allows his ego to get in the way of things. He even ranted once about NOT doing the "Life of Pi," because his name would ruin it.
He's just got a bad stigma right now and after a few years, it'll probably blow over.

i actually think his point in that article is pretty right on. i know nothing about that story, but if i saw his name on it i would be expecting a twist at the end. he's saying there is one in there already so if he did it you would expect it and it would change the experience of the movie. again just my two cents.
oh and i've read spoilers about the happening. i won't see it but i think it's a decent concept. more decent for a twilight zone episode than a full movie though.
